'Scammed 31 million won using daughter Jang Yoon-jeong's name': Mother sentenced to 10 months in prison in first trial
A mother was sentenced to 10 months in prison for defrauding an acquaintance of 31 million won by claiming she was acting on behalf of her famous singer daughter, Jang Yoon-jeong.
[News & Book = Reporter Song Young-du] A mother accused of embezzling tens of millions of won from an acquaintance by using the name of her famous singer daughter, Jang Yoon-jeong, has been sentenced to prison in the first trial.
Presiding Judge Seo Bum-june of the Seoul Eastern District Court's Criminal Division 2 sentenced Ms. Yuk, who was indicted under detention on fraud charges, to 10 months in prison. Ms. Yuk is accused of receiving a total of 31 million won in three separate instances under the guise of investments from an acquaintance between September 2024 and August last year, while mentioning her relationship with her daughter, Jang.
The court noted that the defendant confessed to the crimes and that all charges were recognized as guilty considering the account transaction history, pointing out that the nature of the crime was poor given the methods used and the results. Additionally, the court took into account unfavorable circumstances, such as her prior record of serving a prison sentence in 2018 for failing to repay approximately 400 million won and recent summary orders for fraud. However, the fact that she admitted to the crime and her poor health were considered in the sentencing.
Previously, the prosecution sought a sentence of 1 year and 6 months, but Ms. Yuk's side appealed for leniency, stating that she committed the crime to cover living expenses and credit card bills. Meanwhile, Ms. Yuk had stopped using her mobile phone and credit cards and went into hiding after the complaint was filed, but her whereabouts were identified by investigative authorities in mid-July, leading to her arrest.
